The Earplugs worked and I slept like a baby. I don‘t remember at what time we got up. I had made some research for places to have breakfast. There was this one place, that was only a 20 minutes walk away from our hostel. We lost track now and then, but were able to find it. It was the one with the long queue in front of it. There was only a 10 minutes wait and we got a table inside the café. That was good, because it was very hot already and I had forgotten my hat in the hostel. My head gets burned easily due to my fairyhair.
I had pancakes with a big blob of meringue on top of it. It was both, delicious and evil. So much sugar! I knew my body would scream for a piece of salami or cheese afterwards. Camilla had zucchini roasts, which looked good as well.
We had to take a walk after this big pile of food, and started the walking tour that was recommended in the Lonely Planet. Melbourne has some street art, that was mentioned there. There are alleys full of tourists and really shitty street art. The LP said, that everybody sprays and tags there and that not even a Banksy is safe there. Well we did not like it. And it smelled baaaad there. We found way better street art in the Fitzroy area the next day.
Melbourne has some very nice art deco buildings, that you must look up to see them for. We walked into some of them and into the old arcades. They have nicely restored ceilings and tiles. Still, we were not really sure whether we liked Melbourne or not. It was just another busy city with malls and heaps of construction sites.
We thought, the beach and a nice sunset stroll would be a better choice to spend out time, and it was. We took the tram to St. Kilda. At the stop we got off at, there is an amusement park called Luna Park (there is one in Sydney as well) with Mr. Moon’s Mouth as the entrance gate. It was opened in 1912 and I really like the style of the gate, because it reminded me of a gate at Spree Park, the abandoned amusement park in Berlin. There they filmed one of my favourite childhood series „Spuk unterm Riesenrad“. I was there a couple of years ago to make a tour. It would have been nice to go there, while it was still open. Nowadays, I would not get into one of these parks, even if I was paid. I even get sick on a swing.
We walked the little streets of the neighbourhood. It was nice and calm and less busy there. Next time, I might rent a room there, instead of a hostel in the middle of the city. We found a nice restaurant, that served extremely nice cocktails and yummy vegan food. The falaffel bowl was great and the cocktails afterwards were perfect in the sun. I had one with berries and a gin from the Adelaide Hills. And now i had a quest: Get a bottle of that gin to take home as a souvenir for… myself.
For the sunset, we walked along the beach and sat down at a bench, watching the skaterboarders rolling by. How relaxing!
On the way home, we had to let two trams pass, because it was too full to get on it. That was when we decided, to walk three stops back and hope, that we will be able to hop on the next one, when it is still emptier. It worked and we got home. Slightly tipsy and happy.
